In purchasing new hearing aids, there is now more choice for consumers than ever before. How are you to make a choice? Are hearing aids different from each other? The UT-Houston Audiologists want to explain and simplify the hearing aid technologies available to you and your family.

Audiologic Evaluation

A hearing case history is taken, followed by a diagnostic evaluation (audiogram). Results are explained, indicating the type and severity of hearing loss. If if is determined that a hearing aid might bebeneficial and that no medical problems woul dinterfere with successful use, a hearing aid consultation is recommended. Payment for testing is expected at this time.

Hearing Aid Consultation and Earmold Appointment

If hearing aid use is recommended, th epatient is counseled regarding the advantages, disadvantages and expectations of use and success. the different styles, technologies and type of hearing aid(s) most appropriate for the patient's individual hearing loss will also be discussed. Ear impressions are taken.

Hearing Aid Dispensing and Orientation

The hearing aid(s) are dispensed and the patient has a 30-day trial period. Instructions regarding hearing aid use and care will be provided along with a hearing aid kit. Payment for the hearing aid(s) is expected at this time.

Hearing Aid Follow-Up

Within the 30-day trial period, the patient is seen to discuss the benefits and/or difficulties experienced with hearing aid use. Any necessary modifications of the sound quality are made at this time.

Continuing Care

The hearing aid(s) will be cleaned and checked for proper functioning as needed. Earmold(s) and tubing will be cleaned. These services are complementary while the hearing aid is in warranty. Every patient is encouraged to return for a hearing aid check prior to the expiration of the warranty. Once the warranty has expired, charges will be determined by the service provided.

Please feel free to bring family members to any appointment! They will benefit from having a greater understanding of your communication abilities and needs.
